A long exposure shot of the small creek that flows through the Hopewell Furnace National Historic Site in Elverson, Berks County Pennsylvania.  Six days left in this year long project !

Technical details:
Sakai Toyo 5x7" large format metal field camera with 4x5" film back.
150mm Caltar-S II F 5.6 lens in Copal BT shutter.
Tiffen 0.8 ND filter on lens.
Ilford HP5+ B&W film, shot at ISO 400.
4 seconds at F22.
Developed in Ilford DD-X 1+4 dilution for 7 minutes and 20 seconds @ 20 degrees Celsius using a Beseler 8x10 print drum placed on Unicolor Uniroller 352 auto-reversing rotary base.
4x5" negative scanned with Epson V600.

Cell block 14 at Eastern State Penitentiary.  This particular cell block  was built in 1926 and was the second ESP's three story cell blocks.  Construction was done primarily using prison labor.  Light streams down from the third floor skylights through a series of grates in the ceilings and floors illuminating the floors below.  The prison is located on Fairmont Avenue in Philadelphia Pennsylvania and was built in 1829 and closed in 1971 remaining abandoned for several decades before being re-opened to the public as a history museum.  A great, tripod friendly, place to spend a full day of photography.

A look into one of the closed off cell blocks at Eastern State Penitentiary.  Some of the cell blocks at the prison have been cleaned up and made safe so visitors can tour them but this one remains in its original state.  The structure is located on Fairmont Avenue in Philadelphia Pennsylvania and was built in 1829 and closed in 1971 remaining abandoned for several decades before being re-opened to the public as a history museum.  A great, tripod friendly, place to spend a full day of photography.

The loneliness of a 185 year old prison cell envelopes the self in ways that one can't imagine unless they have been there, touched the cold broken stone walls and breathed the stale air of its confinement.  Eastern State Penitentiary, located on Fairmont Avenue in Philadelphia Pennsylvania, was built in 1829 and closed in 1971 remaining abandoned for several decades before being re-opened to the public as a history museum.  A great, tripod friendly, place to spend a full day of photography.

Water rushing over the dam at Raymond B Winter State Park in Mifflinburg Pennsylvania.

A look at the dam at Waterloo Village, a restored 19th century canal town in Byram Township, Sussex County New Jersey.  Many of the buildings at Waterloo Village date to the 1830s.

This is section of Flat Brook in Sussex County, New Jersey.  The stone arch is a bridge for the passing road and on the other side of the bridge is Buttermilk Falls, said to be the tallest waterfall in New Jersey.

This is the lower quarter section of Buttermilk Falls in Sussex County, New Jersey.  The waterfall is found in a remote region of the New Jersey side of the Delaware Water Gap.  To get to the falls you need to go down a series of dirt and gravel roads that weave their way through forest and a patchwork of farms that were all abandoned when the canceled Tocks Island dam project claimed the land in the late 1960s through early 1970s.  At an estimated 200 feet high, the falls are said to be the tallest ones in New Jersey.  A parking lot is found directly across the road from the falls and no hiking is required to get to them though a steep set of steps can be found that lead up to an observation platform that overlook the falls from above.

This image marks a number of firsts for me including the first time shooting Ilford FP4+ and the first time shooting a full size waterfall with a large format film camera.

Ilford FP4+ B&W Negative Film, shot at ISO 125.
Metered with Minolta one degree digital spot meter.
Metered exposure was 4 seconds @ F22 with zone III placed on shadowed mossy area.  Compensation for the ND filter boosted the calculated exposure to 16 seconds at F22 and film reciprocity compensation for the Ilford FP4+ gave a final calculated exposure of 2 minutes and 9 seconds @ F22.
Semi-stand development in Rodinal 1:100 for 15 minutes in Mod54 daylight tank.
Negative scanned with Epson V600.

My first attempt at a long(ish) exposure of moving water using the large format 4x5 camera.  I could have picked a better time to shoot this where the afternoon sun wasn't shining down directly on the water but it was a first attempt and you have to start somewhere.  The goal of this daily project is to learn as much as possible with every image during each phase of the exposure, developing and darkroom printing cycle.

Camera: Busch Pressman Model D 4x5 large format press camera.

Lens:  150mm Caltar-S II (Calumet re-branded Schneider Symar-S) F 5.6 lens in a Copal BT shutter with Tiffen 0.6 ND Filter.

Film: Arista EDU 200 Ultra B&W Negative Film, shot at ISO 100.

Exposure: 8 seconds @ F45.

Development: Self Developed in Kodak Xtol 1+2 dilution in Paterson Universal Tank using the Taco Method. 9 minutes @ 20 degrees Celsius. Kodak indicator stop bath.  Ilford Rapid Fixer. Photo-Flo rinse.

Scanning: Negative scanned with Epson V600 in two scans and merged back together in PhotoShop since the V600 doesn't natively support 4x5 scans in one pass.
