Circular polarizing filter on lens.  
Kodak Ektar 100 color negative film shot at ISO 100.
1/15th second at F32.
Developed using Unicolor C-41 color developing kit and Beseler 8x10 color print drum placed on Unicolor Uniroller 352 auto-reversing rotary base.   
4x5" negative scanned with Epson V600.
Cropped to desired size in post.

Continuing with this week's mini-theme of churches in color, this is the Waterloo United Methodist Church at Waterloo Village in Byram Township, Sussex County New Jersey.  The church was built in 1859 and has an active congregation to this day.

A building shows its rafters at Waterloo Village in Byram Township, Sussex County, New Jersey.  Many of the buildings in the village are in various states of disrepair after years of inactivity and little to no maintenance.  Recent fund raising has been able to jump start some of the improvements and maintenance efforts but they still have a long way to go for many of the buildings in the historic canal town.

The Canal Society of New Jersey museum with its eclectic mix of historical canal equipment in the front yard.  The museum is located at Waterloo Village in Byram Township, Sussex County, New Jersey. CSNJ is a non-profit organization formed in 1969 to foster the study of the history of New Jersey's two towpath canals which included the Morris and D&L Canals.  The museum is only open during special occasions at Waterloo Village and by special arrangement for school field trips. The building contains artifacts related to the canals and canal operation.  More information on the CSNJ can be found at their web site CanalSocietyNJ.org

The Waterloo United Methodist Church reflects in the Morris Canal at Waterloo Village in Byram Township, Sussex County New Jersey.  The church was built in 1859 and has an active congregation to this day.

The front of a dwelling known as the Depue House, which was moved to historic Millbrook Village from elsewhere and furnished as a shoemaker's house.  The village is located in Hardwick, Warren County, New Jersey.

The rear of Smith's General Store within the historic canal town of Waterloo Village in Byram Township, Sussex County New Jersey..  The store was built in 1830.  Boats traveling the Morris Canal, in the foreground, could tie up at the back of the store and load and unload their cargo into any of the three levels of the store using a wheel and pulley system.

The Peter D. Smith house at Waterloo Village, It was built in 1874 in the Second Empire style of architecture and features a fourth floor cupola, mansard roof, four chimneys and two first floor bay windows. It is in very bad need of repairs including a new roof.   The village is a restored 19th century canal town in Byram Township, Sussex County New Jersey.

One of these days I will get to Waterloo Village on a day when the sun is not blasting from directly overhead.  This was not one of those days.

A fading Mail Pouch Tobacco sign on the side of the Layton Country Store and Cafe in Sandyston, Sussex County, New Jersey.  The sign was hand painted by Harley Warrick in 1977.

An abandoned former officer's dwelling on the grounds of Fort Hancock in Sandy Hook, New Jersey.

Fort Hancock was built in 1890 to protect New York Harbor from attack by sea.  It replaced an earlier fort called Fort Gates that was built during the war of 1812.  Fort Hancock included a series of concrete gun batteries built on large concrete foundations and 12 inch barbette guns. The cold war era brought in new defenses including Nike Missiles that could intercept jet fighters.  The surface to air missiles defended the skies from 1954 through 1974 when the fort closed as an active Army base.  The fort complex and it's remaining 35 buildings are now part of the National Parks of New York Harbor under the National Park System and remains a popular Summertime day trip spot with beaches lining the Sandy Hook peninsula and bike rental areas providing transportation for tourists. Sandy Hook Lighthouse, the oldest working lighthouse in the United States is at the center of the Fort complex.

The rear of several of the worker's dwellings, circa late 1800s, located on the grounds at Batsto Historic Village in Hammonton, New Jersey.  Workers in the village would sometimes live in one of the several identical swellings that lined the road on the west side of the village.  Oddly the one in the foreground seems to be built without two of the windows and the chimney for some reason.

Tilt and swing movements on LF cameras are a beautiful thing :--)

One of my favorite places to shoot is the Cooper Mill in Morris County, New Jersey.  The mill was built by Nathan Cooper in 1826.  Cooper Mill is a working mill with tours available on a scheduled basis. An organization known as "Friends of Cooper Grist Mill" oversees it's maintenance and operation. You can visit their web site at FriendsOfCooperGristMill.org.
