4x5 for 365 project (365/365) - THE END

A cabin typical of those used by George Washington's Revolutionary Army Soldiers during their encampment on the grounds of what is now the Valley Forge National Historic Site in Chester County, Pennsylvania.

This image concludes my 4x5 for 365 daily project for 2014.  The project's goals were to force myself to shoot as much as possible in as many different settings and situations as possible with the 4x5 large format camera in order to learn the mechanics and the science behind this type of photography to the point where it becomes second nature.  I think the project has served those goals well.  Looking back over the project output I have no regrets though I do wish I could have included more portraiture in the mix of images.  2015 sets the stage for new challenges including the addition of a 5x7 camera to the mix and hopefully spending more time with some of the cameras that had to take a back seat to the 4x5 gear during 2014.  I want to thank those who took the time to favorite photos on flickr and like photos on Facebook and comment during the project.  The support of viewers has made it easier to continue in times of self doubt.  I also have to thank my Wife for her never ending support in not only this 365 project but in all my photographic endeavors, I really couldn't ask for a more loving and supportive woman to share my life with.

A well preserved one room schoolhouse, circa 1880, stands alone on a beautifully manicured lawn along PA Route 322 in Annville, Pennsylvania.  These schools were the primary source of education in rural Pennsylvania for grades Kindergarten through eighth grade up until the early 1950s when Pennsylvania instituted a program of school consolidation and built larger, centrally located primary schools in each community.  At one time there were over 10,000 one-room school houses in the commonwealth.

The Kerst-Bertolet Mill in Oley, Berks County, Pennsylvania.  The earliest mill built on this land was built by Johann Heinrich Kersten in 1725. Kersten shortened his name to Kerst as many immigrants did to make for easier pronunciation. The current mill was built in 1841, a 40'x 55' limestone mill standing 3.5 stories and covered with stucco.  The head race is fed from Manatawny Creek and the tail race empties into the pond.

This mansion was built in 1923 and was the home of Archibald Johnston, beloved one term mayor of the city of Bethlehem Pennsylvania and high ranking executive in the Bethlehem Steel Corporation. Johnston was known as the man who spearheaded the unification of the cities of Bethlehem and South Bethlehem.  Mr. Johnston died at the mansion on February 1st, 1948 after a long illness.  His Granddaughter, Janet Housenick, donated 36 acres of the estate to Northampton County to form the Archibald Johnston Conservation Area in 1986.  After her death in 2005, Housenick's will had donated an additional 55 acres including the mansion to Bethlehem Township to create a park and an additional $2 million to maintain the property. The park, which is a popular spot for birders and those that enjoy nature is in a constant battle with developers knocking on the door to try and buy the land and members of Bethlehem Township government who have voiced their desire to demolish the mansion.

Since diving into large format film photography in 2013, I've fallen in love with and been deeply inspired by the works of guys like Paul Caponigro, John Sexton and Fred Picker.  One thing they all had in common was they could all rock a White Birch Tree image.  The White Birch are a study in subtle contrast changes and bark texture that challenges you to get the exposure correct technically while not loosing sight of trying to make the image aesthetically pleasing at the same time. We have so few of them around where I live so I am always on the lookout for them when I travel.  Exposure made at Waterloo Village in Bryam Township New Jersey.
