In 1747 the Moravians, as part of a self-sufficient community, built a thriving center of craft and commerce along the Monocacy Creek and the Lehigh River in Bethlehem Pennsylvania.  Included in that cluster of buildings were a saw mill, soap mill, wash houses,   grist mill, oil mill, tannery, blacksmith shop, water works and a brass foundry.  Some of these structures are still standing today.  This photo shows a section of the sprinhouse including the very rustic looking wooden door.

Some dodging of the wall and burning of the outside was done in post to reveal shadow detail on the brick and control the bright sunlight on the grass.  I really need to shoot this type of scene in full cloud cover to control the tonality range at exposure time.

A road-side pond in the Delaware Water Gap area of Sussex, New Jersey.  It was very windy when I shot this and with the camera and tripod being shaken ever so slightly by the wind, I knew I wasn't going to be getting the crisp shot I wanted.  I also shot it on 38mm 4x5 pinhole and that might actually turn out to be the better shot.

A bent tree, it's leaves wind blown by a warm Spring wind, sits in a grassy section of Wallpack Center.   The town is one of several that were abandoned as part of the canceled Tocks Island dam project back in the late 1960s and early 1970s.

This is the lower quarter section of Buttermilk Falls in Sussex County, New Jersey.  The waterfall is found in a remote region of the New Jersey side of the Delaware Water Gap.  To get to the falls you need to go down a series of dirt and gravel roads that weave their way through forest and a patchwork of farms that were all abandoned when the canceled Tocks Island dam project claimed the land in the late 1960s through early 1970s.  At an estimated 200 feet high, the falls are said to be the tallest ones in New Jersey.  A parking lot is found directly across the road from the falls and no hiking is required to get to them though a steep set of steps can be found that lead up to an observation platform that overlook the falls from above.

This image marks a number of firsts for me including the first time shooting Ilford FP4+ and the first time shooting a full size waterfall with a large format film camera.

Metered with Minolta one degree digital spot meter.
Metered exposure was 4 seconds @ F22 with zone III placed on shadowed mossy area.  Compensation for the ND filter boosted the calculated exposure to 16 seconds at F22 and film reciprocity compensation for the Ilford FP4+ gave a final calculated exposure of 2 minutes and 9 seconds @ F22.

A series of buildings and worker's huts found at Batsto Historic Village in Hammonton, New Jersey.  Batsto Village is like a snapshot of time from our past where a small farming and industrial complex demonstrates what life was like in the 1700s and 1800s.  It has cottages, barns, a mansion, blacksmith shop, grist mill, saw mill, general store, iron furnace, glass works, ice house and a lake with a dam, all very picture worthy.  It's a nice place to spend a couple of hours photographing or to take the family.   More information on Batsto Village, on their web site: BatstoVillage.org

The Lutz-Franklin School was built in 1880 and is the third schoolhouse to be located on this same parcel of land.  The first one was built around 1768 and the second in 1826.  It has a basement area, unusual for a one-room schoolhouse.  It is owned and maintained and was restored by the Lower Saucon Township Historical Society, who gives tours of the building. For more information on the school, visit LutzFranklin.com.

I want to re-shoot this at some point with the aim of trying development by inspection using hangers and tanks and try and control the highlights and contrast in the sky a little better.

Originally built in 1940 by John Kofler as the "Sauconia Theater" this art-deco style theater was a source of entertainment for the Hellertown, Pennsylvania citizenry for decades.  When Kofler's daughter Ellie took over the theater operations in 1968 it was renamed "The Movies". In later years the business struggled, closing several times in the 1980s and finally closing for good in 2001.  Ellie Kofler passed away in 2002 and the building has been for sale for much of the time since then.

I wish I could have stood another two feet to my right to line this up a little better but there was a Direct TV service van parked right there and I was lucky to get any shot at all.
