4x5 for 365 project (265/365)

An old bench shows a history of abuse by time, weather and pigeons as it sits in the courtyard at Eastern State Penitentiary in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.  The prison was built in 1829 and closed in 1971 remaining abandoned for several decades before being re-opened to the public as a history museum.  A great place to spend a full day of photography.

The Church Hill Schoolhouse located on Landis Store Road outside of Boyertown, Berks County, Pennsylvania.  I'm not entirely sure when this particular one-room schoolhouse was built.  According to St. John-Hill United Church of Christ records, a log schoolhouse was first built by the congregation on this location in 1750 and later torn down and replaced with a stone one in 1786.  I don't think this is that stone schoolhouse from 1786 though since the construction and architecture is probably from around the mid to late 1800s.  There is no mention of another school being built in the church records however.

The Kerst-Bertolet Mill in Oley, Berks County, Pennsylvania.  The earliest mill built on this land was built by Johann Heinrich Kersten in 1725. Kersten shortened his name to Kerst as many immigrants did to make for easier pronunciation. The current mill was built in 1841, a 40'x 55' limestone mill standing 3.5 stories and covered with stucco.  The head race is fed from Manatawny Creek and the tail race empties into the pond.

An abandoned former officer's dwelling on the grounds of Fort Hancock in Sandy Hook, New Jersey.

Fort Hancock was built in 1890 to protect New York Harbor from attack by sea.  It replaced an earlier fort called Fort Gates that was built during the war of 1812.  Fort Hancock included a series of concrete gun batteries built on large concrete foundations and 12 inch barbette guns. The cold war era brought in new defenses including Nike Missiles that could intercept jet fighters.  The surface to air missiles defended the skies from 1954 through 1974 when the fort closed as an active Army base.  The fort complex and it's remaining 35 buildings are now part of the National Parks of New York Harbor under the National Park System and remains a popular Summertime day trip spot with beaches lining the Sandy Hook peninsula and bike rental areas providing transportation for tourists. Sandy Hook Lighthouse, the oldest working lighthouse in the United States is at the center of the Fort complex.
